Let’s talk about imposter syndrome
You’ve started a new role. One month in, everyone is welcoming and supportive, and you’re giving it your all to get up to speed, trying to be the independent, high-performing professional you were in your last position.
But you’re not quite there yet...
The self-doubting thoughts start to creep in:
“Did they make a mistake hiring me?”
“Why is this taking so long?”
“I should know this by now…”
I was recently reminded of this by someone who shared how much this onboarding phase was shaking their confidence.
What felt hardest wasn’t the job itself, but the gap between who they were at the end of their previous role, confident, contributing, recognized, at their “peak”, and who they feel like now. The 'not quite useful' employee. Sometimes even a burden to the team.
That gap can feel bigger than it really is.
Going from being the go-to person to someone asking questions, figuring things out, and second-guessing can feel like going backwards.
It’s not. It’s just new. And unfamiliar. 🤷🏼♀️
So they did something simple: they went back and read old messages from former colleagues, small reminders of who they are when they’re in their flow. It didn’t change everything overnight, but it helped them feel a bit more grounded again.
Because the confident, high-performing version of you hasn’t disappeared. She’s still there, just getting used to new ground, onboarding one step at a time.
If you’re going through this phase yourself, be patient. Allow some landing time; “not quite there yet” is part of the process. You’ve got this! 🌻
